🧠 Insights from the Field
At ETHCC, blockchain protocol engineer Zak Cole introduced the Ethereum Community Foundation (ECF), a new initiative dedicated to funding projects that increase the price and utility of ETH.
Operating under the motto “ETH to $10k is a requirement, not a meme,” the ECF is designed to serve ETH holders directly. It funds immutable, credibly neutral, token-free projects that contribute to ETH burn, network security, and institutional adoption.
Cole criticized the absence of a burn mechanism in EIP-4844, and highlighted a recurring trend: many projects once funded by the Ethereum Foundation eventually pivot toward for-profit ventures. The ECF offers a more ETH-aligned approach, prioritizing funding for projects that reinforce Ethereum’s monetary premium and long-term economic resilience.
As its first initiative, the ECF is launching the Ethereum Validator Association (EVA), a mechanism to give validators a voice by expressing preferences through their staked ETH, aiming to improve coordination and representation on the protocol level.
The ECF website is launching soon! Here is a sneak peak on Grant Eligibility Criteria:
Projects must do the following:
Be tokenless (no governance or utility token)
Earn fees in ETH only, and burn them
Implement immutable smart contracts (non-upgradable)
Deploy on Ethereum Mainnet
⚠ Projects are disqualified if they use third-party ecosystems for data availability (DA) as opposed to using ETH blobspace.
